Description

Conceptual art was created as a rejection of the art world.
Now it has taken over (particularly in the UK).

I am a fan of good conceptual pieces, like this piece by Yoko Ono, entitled "Closet Piece II":

"Put one memory into one half of your head.
Shut it off and forget it.
Let the other half of the brain long for it."

The idea is that the object in the gallery (a card with those printed instructions on it) is not the artwork at all. The real artwork is created in the viewer's mind when they choose to follow the instructions. Literally, the "concept" is the art.

Since Ono's days, conceptual art has wandered into one of two dead ends: either the art is just a lame joke that is forgotten as soon as you realize the punch line, or the art requires such a lengthly text description of the idea behind it that the physical object doesn't really need to exist in the first place, since you spend more time reading about it than you do looking at it or thinking about it.

I didn't actually know the term for this. I think I have a habit of assuming that the artist always took a degree of viewer subjectivity into account for gallery pieces when that's not the case.
